Modern Tools, Timeless Bonds: Technology at Silverbell Homestead
Loneliness is a growing problem for many seniors, especially those in poor physical health. In 2023, one in three older adults reported infrequent contact with people from outside their homes. Those in their golden years in residential care have more options for social interaction. However, they may have less frequent contact with their families and long-term friends. Staying connected supports mental and physical health. At Silverbell, we believe in utilizing modern technology for seniors to help our residents maintain bonds. They are embracing technology to keep them engaged, informed, and close to the people who are important to them.
Bridging the Distance with a Tap
Video conferencing came of age during the pandemic. Our residents can use tablets and smartphones to bond with family and friends through FaceTime, Zoom, or another user-friendly platform.
While not a substitute for physical interaction, video conferencing allows for much more frequent contact with people who might be far away or even traveling for work or pleasure. This more frequent contact strengthens relationships and keeps friendships alive.
Staying Social Online
Many of our residents love Facebook. It’s their favorite way to keep up with family news and see pictures of their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and household pets. Social media allows people to be present in their loved ones’ lives and at least see images of events they may no longer be physically able to attend.
It also sparks conversations within our community. Everyone likes to show off their grandchildren!
Exploring New Interests from Home
Old dogs can learn new tricks. We support lifelong curiosity. Modern technology for seniors enables our residents to pursue new interests without having to leave indoors. This is a situation that can be a challenge for some and impossible for others. They use the internet to take virtual tours of museums and attractions, to watch musical performances, and to try new recipes. There is also access to appropriate exercise and wellness videos. They also have access to hours of television and movies on various streaming platforms. These can be classics from their youth or new, niche shows they can enjoy.
And, of course, they can use the internet to access humorous material that brightens their day. It opens the door to new hobbies and discoveries. It also provides options for residents to continue to improve the interests they already have. One of them who cross-stitches, for example, has access to instructional videos and new patterns.
A Helping Hand Along the Way
For many older people, these technologies can be a challenge. They didn’t grow up with them and may not have found them essential in the past. Our staff are trained to help set up devices, teach apps, and answer questions about how to use modern technology for seniors. They can also help with troubleshooting and fixing fundamental problems.
We carefully provide this support, not wanting anyone to feel as if they are being condescended, or treated like children, but taking the time to help somebody who may be confused.
Compassionate Care Through Modern Technology for Seniors
Silverbell Homestead is rooted in tradition and heart. But we are not afraid to embrace tools that help our residents feel more connected and better experience the modern world.
We offer the support they need to use technology to cultivate joy and connection. It ensures all of our residents have the proper hardware and software to talk to their family and friends.
